Violence against Women 365 International Poster Exhibition - The 1600 display

I am pleased to announce that for the forthcoming 16 days of Action from the 25th November to the 10th December inclusive, in conjunction with Women's Aid here in Ireland, we propose to hold the largest ever display of the "Violence against Women 365 International Poster Exhibition" in Dublin. Now in its 6th year, the exhibition has been an overwhelming success wherever it has taken place since it first went on public display in 2004 with posters on display covering all forms of violence and abuse against both women and children. It has taken place in 11 countries so far and continues to reach a wide audience.

This particular display is different and very special as it is an attempt to have the largest ever public display of posters on the issues of violence against women and children. The aim is to have 1600 posters on display at the same time in one location. We hope to compliment that with a live online feed of 100 posters per day so that online viewers can see the Exhibition almost as if they were actually there... It is a huge task but it mirrors the global enormity of the issues of violence against women and children. More information about the exhibition including examples of some displays and pictures can be found on http://www.dvposters365.net or on its Facebook group page.

Hi everyone,

Just want to update on the the Exhibition next week as there has been a few changes. Some changes are regrettable but made solely in the best interests of the audience and to maximise the effect of the Exhibition for all involved.

The location for the Exhibition is the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield in Dublin. It has a wonderful yet intimate atmosphere and I know that the Exhibition will work extremely well there. Well done to Christina Sherlock and her colleagues in Women's Aid for finding and securing it.

The Exhibition is actually opening on the 24th November at 6.30pm

The most important change is that for Health & Safety reasons, it is not possible to show the 1600 posters. The Exhibition is still going ahead but the number to be displayed will be somewhere in the region of about 700. Quiet simply, the sheer magnitude of having 1600 posters within the space available for the Exhibition could potentially overwhelm and cause distress or discomfort to any person viewing the Exhibition. That's not what the Exhibition is about. Creating an awareness of the issue of Violence aganist Women and Children is one thing but the paramount importance here is for the safety and welfare of people who are taking the time to view the Exhibition.

The second issue is in relation to showing posters from the Exhibition on live online feed. Unfortunately, there is a copyright issue here that I have been unable to clarify satisfactorily having sought appropriate advices. I now believe that rather than showing individual posters, by showing a general film of the Exhibition, we can avoid this issue.

I regret if these changes cause any inconvienence for anyone but they are made in the best interests everyone for the reasons set out.

It will still be an amazing display, I can assure you

Colm

The “Violence against Women 365 International Poster Exhibition” could never have taken place initially in 2004 without the tremendous generosity of so many individuals, organisations and agencies, both statutory and voluntary, from over 60 countries around the world who donated posters and other awareness materials to the Exhibition. The Exhibition grows from strength to strength and has now appeared in 11 countries (so far….). There are currently approx 850 posters held within the Exhibition and through a rotation sequence, all get regularly featured.

The proposed display of the Exhibition for the 16 Days of Action is a very unique display and a high target of 1600 posters on display is set. To achieve that target, I am appealling to individuals, organisations and agencies, both statutory and voluntary  to donate awareness materials to include in the Exhibition such as:

  • Posters - any size e.g. business cards, postcards, A5 upwards even to bus shelter size! Simple posters are just as effective as graphic images
  • Public Service Announcements (PSA) - in any language, audio/video format that can be played/shown simultaneously during the Exhibition.
  • Any other awareness materials - e.g. previously used posters, discarded materials from previous awareness campaigns such as brochures, pamphlets, newsletters, booklets etc. Everything can be adapted and displayed!!

If you are not in a position to donate materials, you may still help by forwarding this appeal through your Newsletters, List-Serves, Social Networks, Mailing lists etc. or recommend alternative sources. The Exhibition is anxious to receive posters from countries  in Africa, South America, Central & Eastern Europe, Middle East and Asia.

While hard copies of posters and other materials are the desirable format where possible, posters are always gratefully received in whatever format that is available to the donor. Unfortunately, the Exhibition is not in receipt of any funding, there is very limited resources available to facilitate printing.

If you can assist in any way or want more information, please email Colm Dempsey at dvposters@gmail.com and a secure postal address will be provided by return

 Many, many thanks

 COLM
