A campaign to “air your dirty laundry” took place at the Saartjie Baartman Centre on 11 December 2009, as part of the Centre’s 10 birthday celebrations, and also as part of the 16 days of activism to end violence against women. Some 200 children from neighbouring schools were invited to join our shelter children to spend a morning of fun and seriousness painting their messages on t-shirts.

Dili — The National Parliament in Timor-Leste passed a long-awaited law on domestic violence on 3 May. UNIFEM provided support to the Government in drafting the legislation and worked with the Parliament to inform legislators about the issue.

Within the framework of the Year of Peace and Security in Africa, the African Union (AU) in partnership with UNIFEM (part of UN Women) presented a photo exhibition during the 15th AU Summit in Kampala, Uganda in July.

Under the theme “Make Peace Happen: Prevent Violence against Women and Girls”, the exhibition featured a series of pictures that aimed to raise awareness on the ruthless reality faced by women in conflict situations.

Kigali — Rwanda’s National Action Plan on UN Security Council resolution 1325 was officially launched during the International Forum on the Role of Leadership in Promoting, Accelerating and Sustaining Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Kigali on 17-18 May.

The meeting was organized by the Forum of Rwandan Women Parliamentarians, in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender and Family Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, with the support of UNIFEM, UNDP and other partners.

I am pleased to announce that for the forthcoming 16 days of Action from the 25th November to the 10th December inclusive, in conjunction with Women's Aid here in Ireland, we propose to hold the largest ever display of the "Violence against Women 365 International Poster Exhibition" in Dublin. Now in its 6th year, the exhibition has been an overwhelming success wherever it has taken place since it first went on public display in 2004 with posters on display covering all forms of violence and abuse against both women and children.
