2010 - Tajikistan: Parliament is drafting legislation on the prevention of domestic violence.

The Parliament of Tajikistan is currently drafting legislation on the prevention of domestic violence. A working group, composed of members of parliament, representatives of State agencies and civil society associations, has been established to elaborate a comprehensive bill covering all aspects of this problem.

For her young age, 17-year-old Zehra has already experienced a lifetime of pain. Her parents left rural Tajikistan to work in Russia when she was just two years of age. Zehra was raised by her aunt, who was verbally and physically abusive. At 15, Zehra ran away after her aunt accused her of theft. Like many other teens, she headed to the capital, Dushanbe, in hopes of finding work. Zehra quickly encountered the harsh realities of living in the capital of Central Asia’s poorest country: She was sold into prostitution.

Taekwondo World Champion Shakhlo Mukhammedrakhimova, 20, is also a champion of ending violence against women. In her native Tajikistan, she regularly visits crisis centres and speaks out on radio and television as a spokesperson for the UNiTE to End Violence against Women Campaign.

Taekwondo Trainers Conduct Special Say No-UNiTE Information Session for Military Men of Tajikistan

On April 6 trainers of the Taekwondo Federation of Tajikistan visited a military unit near city of Dushanbe and conducted a special session to enhance awareness of the servicemen on the Global UN SG Say NO – UNiTE campaign.
