National Assembly of Zambia Observes the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

The National Assembly of Zambia marked the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence with a number of activities in a show of solidarity with the international community.

NOWSPAR hosted an advocacy training to facilitate capacity development of young female sport leaders in the sport for development sector in Zambia. The training will equip young female leaders with skills to conduct advocacy within their organisations on various issues.

Shupe Makashinyi is the Project Coordinator for Let’s Protect Our Girl Children. Based in Zambia, the project is backed by Equality Now in partnership with the Population Council, and supported by a grant from the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women.

2010 - Zambia: The National Assembly organized a sensitization session on VAW

The Gender in Development Division (GIDD), which spearheads gender activities in Zambia, has been holding meetings in 2010 with all stakeholders, including representatives of government and non-governmental organizations, to plan for the commemoration of this important day.

Sub-Saharan Africa: Men Become Partners for Change

Men are the primary perpetrators of gender-based violence. They are also critical partners in eliminating it. With support from the UN Trust Fund, the African Women’s Development and Communications Network (FEMNET) has worked in Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Somaliland, South Africa and Zambia to rally men around advocating an end to violence against women.
