Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children
The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children (SBC) was opened in May 1999 with the mission to develop and implement through public-private partnership the concept of a one-stop centre, which offers integrated and comprehensive services for women, youth and children who experience domestic and/or sexual violence. These services, provided by the SBC and nine on-site partner organisations, include safe short- to medium-term accommodation, specialized counselling (HIV/AIDS, trauma, grief) and health services, economic empowerment, legal advice, and community outreach and prevention projects. In this way, if a client needs to be referred by the intake counsellor to different services, e.g. shelter, legal advice, specialised counselling, the client will find these services under one roof, thus minimising re-traumatisation by not having to travel distances, only to repeat her story. The SBC also seeks ways to end violence against women through research, advocacy and lobbying.
